DIALOGUE ON RACE LOUISIANA
TYPE-DRIVEN PSA
A few years ago, I participated in a program called Dialogue on Race Louisiana and it opened my eyes.
Over the course of several weeks, our small group met to have open, honest conversations about racism, inequality and diversity with trained facilitators.
It taught me there is a way we can openly talk about the problems we have around race in America and that it takes being open, honest and vulnerable.
More people need to participate in this program, so when the opportunity for creating a type-driven PSA came up in a recent class, I knew exactly the organization I would choose.

PROCESS
There is so much that can be said about this important topic and the DORLA mission, but we only had 30 seconds.
The greatest need for Dialogue on Race Louisiana is participation. So, the focus of this 30-second PSA is to encourage people to join the conversation and participate in the program.

30-SECOND SCRIPT
For concept development, I watched Maxine Crump’s, the founder of DORLA, TEDxLSU talk from 2015 and re-read several articles that were shared to participants in the program like Peggy MacIntosh’s article Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack. These materials allowed me to create a list of keywords and develop a concise script for the piece.
One way to showcase diversity and inclusion is through sound. So, with a little help from my friends from around the U.S., we utilized a variety of voices that embody the diverse participants DORLA seeks - including race, nationality, gender and age.
I sent them the script and they (quickly - I was under a tight deadline) recorded their voices on their phones and sent it back to me to lace together.
FINAL SCRIPT
Talk creates action.
That’s why silence is our greatest enemy.
We can no longer hide from discussions about race in America.
You are needed at the table.
To join the conversation.
To listen.
To learn.
To be a voice.
Together, we can dismantle racism through meaningful, honest and open dialogue.

INITIAL MOTION TESTS
In the early stages of concept development, I wanted to challenge myself by attempting typography in Cinema 4d. ( At the time, I was in the beginning stages of learning the program.) Below are the motion tests I created while learning the program.
