LOLLAPALOOZA 2020
FESTIVAL OPENER + EVENT PACKAGE
Lolla brings together artists from various music genres over 4 days in Grant Park, a 319-acre park surrounded by high-rise buildings and Lake Michigan.
It’s this location that sparked us to establish Nature + Nostalgia + Technology as the focal point, while combining 2d and 3d elements into scenes set against the iconic Chicago skyline.
More details on how this project came together as well as additional assets are below.

SOCIAL DELIVERABLES
A portion of this assignment was to modify the original horizontal design into multiple formats for social platforms. Below are additional design elements we created.
PROCESS + PLANNING
This project was successful because we each brought our own strengths to the table. Jayson Hahn is a wizard with camera movement and thinking outside the box. Nicole Pappas is talented in 2d animation with a sharp eye for detail and deep knowledge of character rigging. Each and every scene in this piece was a collaboration that delivered this project in the end.
Below are a few behind the scenes shots of our cinema 4d files. Highlights of my specific contributions in these featured scenes include: lighting, texturing, modeling, integrating the fish animation into the computers…and much more. For all of us on Team Nicole, this was our first time using Redshift at this level - in addition, this was my first time integrating 2d projections inside a c4d scene.
One of the biggest lessons this project taught was the importance of planning. We had 4 weeks to complete this project and mashing both 2d and 3d elements into one project on a tight timeline brought several challenges. To ensure we worked effectively as a team, I developed a thorough schedule to walk us through each step of the way. Included below are a few screen grabs of the spreadsheet that kept us on track and able to deliver on time.
NIGHT ALTERNATIVE
One of the fun aspects of this project was our ability to play with textures.
We were inspired by the lights in the Chicago skyline that play a part of the real-life concert experience and decorate the skyline of Lolla each year.
We found that when we turned the dome light off of the 3d scene and solely illuminated the 2d animations, we could replicate the night concert vibes that could be used in additional pieces for social or promotions.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT + PROCESS
For this music festival opener, we wanted to highlight the unique qualities of Lollapalooza while utilizing both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional design elements. Lolla in itself is a juxtaposition - uniting artists from various music genres including alternative rock, heavy metal, hip hop and electronic music - over 4 days.
Located in Grant Park, a beautiful green-space in the corporate center of Chicago, the festival is surrounded by highrise buildings and borders Lake Michigan. We wanted to recreate the essence of this location through a “mash-up” focusing on music, nature and technology. The piece highlights the festival headliners on a personalized stage representing the many stages at Lolla while surrounded by the Chicago skyline.

INITIAL STORY BOARD + STYLE FRAMES
Below are our initial style frames and storyboard for the project. The original idea centered more around a guitar pedal igniting motion and subsequently sparking various nature elements that would interact with technology. However, as we continued to work together, our final project evolved into including more of the iconic Chicago skyline and location of the festival rather than focusing mostly on music and technology elements.
